Autistic children get hope with therapy center at Sgr

Srinagar, June 12: The autistic children in Kashmir have a new hope as the psychiatric department of government medical college (GMC) Srinagar has started the first of its kind therapy centre for affected children here.
The centre which has been recently started at the community general hospital unit at the SMHS hospital, will spare the parents of the children from taking them outside the state for treatment.
Along with the therapy centre where the children will improve their learning skills, the GMC has also started outpatient department (OPD) for routine check-up of children with psychiatric diseases once a week.
“We have also enlisted the support of some parents who have autistic children and learnt the therapy outside the state. Autism is a disorder which is characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal as well as non-verbal communication and the restricted repetitive behavior. Autism has strong genetic basis,” said Dr Aqeel Hussain, Consultant Psychiatry.
He added that earlier the parents of the affected children had to go outside the state for speech and behavioral therapy. “Many parents left their jobs as they had to stay for long time outside the state for the treatment of the disorder in their children. The poor parents couldn’t afford to go out. Now with this facility available here, the children get treatment at one place,” said Hussain.
Doctors said that treatment for the disorder is aimed at lessening the associated deficits and family distress, and to increase quality of life.
Senior Registrar at Psychiatric Diseases Hospital, Dr Mansoor Gash, said, “Children with autism have trouble communicating. They have trouble understanding what other people think and feel. This makes it very hard for them to express themselves either with words or through gestures, facial expressions, and touch. A child with autism who is very sensitive may be greatly troubled by sounds, touches, smells, or sights that seem normal to others.”
The centre is manned by remedial educators, speech therapists and development therapists to treat the children and is the first of its kind in the state and of the few in government sector in whole India.
“It is entirely based on volunteerism by psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, remedial educators, speech therapists, developmental therapists, pediatricians, parents of children who have successfully got trained and helped their children to overcome limitations produced by autism. The treatment module is unique in the sense that parents are trained and encouraged to work with their children and in the process creating a pool of trained people to help children with autism,” said an official.
